Spin off from the other thread. Posted on this board since this technology and the company are somewhat a political issue.

I'm a fan of Tesla, don't get me wrong. I was thinking about buying the Model 3 but may have changed my mind. There's an argument to be made if this car is "better for the world" or is it even better for the consumer.

Sticker Shock

Model 3 starts around $44,000/Model S around $85,000

Yes, Model 3 is a damn good bit more than originally advertised (which was in the mid $30k).

Charge times

Tesla Supercharging stations charge with up to 145 kW of power distributed between two adjacent cars, with a maximum of 120 kW per car. That is up to 16 times as fast as public charging stations; they take about 20 minutes to charge to 50%, 40 minutes to charge to 80%, and 75 minutes to 100%.

Cost to operate

This is where Telsa people may think they are good. Wrong. Right now I drive a Ford Fusion Hybrid that averages about 42-45 mpg on my commute.

Cost to charge a Tesla
quote:

The Tesla Model S can be purchased with a battery capacity of between 60 kWh and 85 kWh. If you have a 60 kWh model - which has a range of 208 miles - it costs $9.80 to charge based on electricity prices of 13 cents per kWh

My Ford, when full of fuel, has a range of about 540 miles. Costs about $30.

Tesla has a range of about 208 miles fully charged at a cost of $9.8. To reach the same range as my car, you would have to charge the Tesla a smidge over 2 1/2 times which comes out to around $25.50.

So, Tesla is a tiny bit cheaper to "fill up" than my hybrid, but it takes a long time to charge to 100%, and the car costs $44,000.

I thought driving an electric car was going to be substantially cheaper to operate... nope.

So, why should I buy a Telsa? I'm not really seeing it from a practical standpoint.

Fun to drive because of the flat torque profile is probably the best reason. I welcome Tesla's entrance in to the market, even though I'm a truck/SUV guy. I think they'll create a ton of battery waste and we won't be completely electric maybe ever, but I don't see the harm in them.

So you can say you own a Tesla, of course.

The complimentary exploding batteries are the clincher for me. How can you not want that? And explosions after a wreck? Everyone loves them some fire.

I'm not a pretentious libtard. I'm a practical person looking for a practical car.

I do like to fart in the car though.

Stupid question... does "punching it" use more battery power than a normal start?

Okay, not one person actually responded with a good reply pertaining to the facts in my OP.

Come on PT, don't be the OT!

It's a trade off. Fossil fuel for metal mining.

That's sort of my point in the OP. What benefit does this car actually produce for the planet and consumer?

No oil changes. Comparison in maintenance could be a time/money saver.

I'm gonna guess yes.

Get a Tesla for the same reason you should eat only organic food: so you can pretend to be better than everyone.

Is that with the rebates and incentives?

A lot of bells and whistles for the money. And good torque.

Reliability has been an issue though. I doubt I'd get one at this point.

I wonder what type of maintenance schedule these cars are on actually.

Interesting.

Has nothing to do with it. Are you people young or something? Seems like you're always worried about impressing people or what people think of you.

I grew up a while back.

Do these still exist? I have no idea. Found something.

Federal Tax Credit For Vehicles Delivered
$3,750 January 1 to June 30, 2019
$1,875 July 1 to December 31, 2019

Looks like that will be phased out pretty soon.

Environmental cost.

Lithium strip mining in China, South America, and USA. Sure it's replenishable. , but at the cost of 500,000 gallons of H20/tonne of lithium. Countries in SA actually have very dry regions in Argentina and Chile and that is where the mining operations take place. then you have the increases cases of fish, wildlife and livestock carcasses being found downstream from the runoff of the mining process.

lithium extraction inevitably harms the soil and causes air contamination. In Argentina’s Salar de Hombre Muerto, locals claim that lithium operations have contaminated streams used by humans and livestock, and for crop irrigation. In Chile, there have been clashes between mining companies and local communities, who say that lithium mining is leaving the landscape marred by mountains of discarded salt and canals filled with contaminated water with an unnatural blue hue.

This is more detrimental than carbon immissions could ever hope to be. I'm all for cleaner modes of transportation and protecting the environment, but Tesla cars are not the answer.
