If I remember, Paper Lion was a made for TV movie. Not exactly A-list stuff. He certainly wasn't so big of a star that you'd automatically center the show around him at the expense of the other members of the ensemble. It'd be like claiming someone who made a couple Hallmark Channel movies today is a big star.

Paper Lion wasn’t a TV movie. It was a theatrical release. Alda had the lead in The Mephisto Waltz and some other roles as well. He was also a Tony nominated Broadway actor. He wasn’t Dustin Hoffman, but he was a name actor. More so than the rest of the original cast.
