The first 3 seasons were gold, but you can see the way the writers began to make it all about Hawkeye as time went on. Very few Trapper centered episodes. Hawkeye given the best lines. Even in some of the laugh scenes, Alda takes over the top to steal the scene. Still a great show.
Potter was a very solid replacement. Margaret/Frank being broken up was stupid.

I still wonder why Alan Alda was given center stage. Prior to MASH, how big of a star was he? He certainly wasn't any bigger than Wayne Rogers.
