I grew up in the late 70's and early 80's, and I look back at some decisions my parents made regarding me and my brother and just shake my head. She used to always leave us in the car with the windows down while she would grocery shop. Like we'd sit out in the car for 30-45 minutes, unsupervised. And we wouldn't be the only kids out there. Crazy to think about now.

Ironically these are the things that people like to brag about to this day about their up bringing

the country literally created the 911 system because so many parents at the time were doing what you just described
