I wouldn't say dumpster fire.

They went to the final four 3 times in the 60s and once in the 70s.

I don't think it was more a matter of NC State and UNC being rivals due to them being NC's state schools than Duke being bad.

In Bill Foster's last year at Duke they went to the Elite 8 (coach K came on the following year). Under Foster Duke won the ACC twice and made it to the final of the national title game. (all in the span of 4 years before K became the HC)

growing up in NC, more people hate on Duke because they are a private school (we liked to call them NY/NJ University or a Yankee School) where majority of the student body isn't from NC.
