A person very close to me goes to a UMC. A bible is barely cracked. They are very liberal and speak directly of progressive politics. It’s like Man In The Castle for religion. When I left I literally felt disgusted.

This is why the UMC is in this position.

We attend (future attendance unclear) a UMC in a major city (not suburbs) where the direct opposite is true. No progressive politics discussed. Biblically-centric. Gospel-focused. It's a large congregation. It's not quite SBC level, but I don't think anyone from that background would object.

I've attended another prominent UMC in the city, even larger and wealthier, which similarly involves no progressive political discussion/undertones. However, while scripture is certainly used, it's very much what I call "chicken soup for the soul." I joke that the sermons are typically along the lines of "today we'll learn about the virtues of sharing." It's kid stuff, but it's not objectionable theology.

Meanwhile, I know of other UMC congregations in the same city that are really partisan political rallies on Sunday. Their staff are community activists. They're waging war on the type of people who attend other UMC churches across town.

Just a question for the room, but what are Orthodox services like?
