It is not the only way to play poker. Some people are great readers. Some people have horrible tells. Some players show up specifically to lose.
I don't play the Texas FOLD em strategy in tourneys, but I have seen a few (very smart) players make a nice quiet (and tidy) living with it. And, no. Not "playing scared". But playing a strategy that works consistently if a monetary goal is set and met, then the player becomes far more aggressive.
