Sometimes schools just get a little too quick on the trigger on some long time coaches if things slip a little bit. He missed the tournament just ONCE in 17 years at Texas (3rd to final season), his last 2 years he still made the tournament and won a game even in one of those years in the tourney.

I just dont know what they were thinking. That is some pretty consistent success and they traded him in for clearly a worse return at the moment. Texas got a gift to get in the tourney last year at 19-14, 8-10 B12, and lost in the 1st game anyways. Yeah Smart was getting VCU to the tourney but that's exactly what Barnes was already giving you. Heck, a lot of coaches continue to get VCU to the tourney anyways.

Certainly not a good look for Texas as they continue to be a bubble team each year. Heck, 3 years ago they were terrible, 11-22. Meanwhile Rick Barnes takes a bunch of 3-stars at Tennessee to #1 in the country
