Have him send you a copy of his insurance. I did this before I let a guy step foot in my yard. He sent it to me and all was good

Nope, ask him to have his agent send you his certificate of insurance. Never accept a cert from the contractor by mail or in person. They used to use liquid paper to forge the dates and coverage amounts but anyone can scan and forge great copies now. Jam up price for what you want done.
