Depending on your life both have advantages. If you enjoy a lifestyle of moving and enjoying different cities/areas then renting is great. I have been doing it for a few years now and don't plan on stopping. Stayed on the beach in Cali for a few years and made some great friends and memories. Going to Vegas at the end of this month to look at some places because I may move there for 6 months or so just because I want to. That's not to mention the advantage of no maintenance so I can literally go every day and do what I want with no worries.
I do own property in Louisiana still FWIW.
