The PS2 is looked at as the most successful console of all time but the PS4 is still on pace to out sell it.

PS4 is at 94 million sales WW.

It will more than likely get to 100 million faster than the Wii and probably the PS2.

But the big difference in the PS2 and the PS4 is the online revenue. 12.5 billion in 2018.

Depends how you define success.

The gaming market is much, much bigger now than it was 20-30 years ago so bigger numbers in terms of overall sales and revenue are to be expected.

I remember back in the 90's when a game selling 1 million copies was considered a monumental milestone.

I still think the NES, PS2 and Wii are probably the most successful home consoles ever but PS4 by the end of it's run will likely be up there with them.

Incredible exclusives left and right will do that. Xbox has just fallen apart this generation and may even get outrun by Nintendo.

You have to adjust for inflation as well and define successful. Those older systems adjusted for inflation kill the revenue numbers of this current generation.

The Atari 2600 in 2018 dollars is a $800 investment

Yeah the NES was a defacto monopoly on the home console market for most of its existence. "Nintendo" basically became a synonymy for video games themselves.

PS2's #'s are crazy and what makes PS2's numbers even more ridiculous is they had a ton of legitimate competition for most of its lifespan. The Dreamcast, the GameCube, the XBox, it managed to crush them all. Sold more than all of them combined THREE TIMES OVER.

I'm also surprised to see PS1 did so many sales as well.

Sony has clearly crushed the competition in each generation outside of the PS3 era where they stumbled early on but slowly and surely came back to basically even.

DVD playback was HUGE for the PS2 when it launched in 2000. The DC had an incredible launch and was easy to work with but hype just died down as we got closer and closer to the PS2 launch. XB would've been absolutely fricked if not for Halo. Nintendo's third party issues that started with the N64 were even worse on GC.

It should be safe to say PS2 will remain on top. PS5 is rumored 1 year from release.

The next round will be interesting

I don't think the PS4 will come too close to PS2 numbers. There's no longer huge price disparities ($100 PS2 vs $500-600 PS3) to really provide a longer tail of growth for PS4. I think it'll cap out around 125-130m.

I'd say it's without question the biggest comeback for any console manufacturer ever. But if you go by pure sales numbers, it's not going to be. On the other hand, if you measure profit, no console will likely ever touch PS4 in profitability. I don't see how PS5 will be able to duplicate what happened with much better competition.

I had forgotten about this, this was indeed huge.

DVD's were still a brand new thing to most the general public when the PS2 was launching and most stand alone DVD players were close to $200.

Getting a game console that was also as a DVD player for like $300 or whatever actually was a great deal.

The PS2 served as my first DVD player for years.

This is what I was addressing. It’s pretty expected that the PS4 will fall off in a couple years. I don’t think it gets to 150 mil either. Especially with the PS5 having backwards compatibility. But with online revenue this is more than likely their most profitable console ever. The numbers it is pulling in are insane.

Was basically the perfect storm. Microsoft wasnt a threat at all with the Xbone and Nintendo screwed the pooch with the WiiU launch and just took too long to catchup with the Switch. So you had basically one console that everybody bought.

What are you referring to in the pipeline?

That was why I got one in the first place. At the time all the decent DVD players were close enough in cost that it made sense to go ahead and get the game system that could do both.

It also helped Sony quite a bit that Sega screwed up and had zero copyright protection which is what spurred them on to dump the Dreamcast so fast. Nintendo insisted on using proprietary discs that could not hold as much info as a DVD.

Not sure what he might be referring to, but Microsoft does not plan to get caught with its pants down this time when it comes to horsepower and offerings. The next console is going to be two. One beefy one with specs rumored to be greater than PS5 and a cheaper model possibly geared towards streaming.

On the topic of streaming Microsoft is also launching their xCloud, which is going to bring games to any device. You can bluetooth your xbox controller to your ipad to play games if you want. They other big thing here to rival PS NOW streaming is leveraging the 54 global Azure datacenters. That service is going to stream better and be across the world.

Sure it is going to come down to exclusives on the consoles, but Microsoft got to where is was by offering an underpowered machine and not locking down some studios. Underpower is not going to be a thing this time, we will see how they make it with exclusives.

A smaller selling point though, the new Xbox is going to play games back through the original Xbox with their backwards compatibility. Not every game on Xbox and X360 work, but many do. All Xbox One games will work on the new Xbox.

The short version, the only thing holding back the future Xbox world are the Sony exclusives. If Microsoft can lock down some solid AAA titles/exlusives, then the pendulum will swing.

There is a Sony love fest here, mainly based on the exclusives, but the future Xbox ecosystem is looking to change that.

Clearly the Sony love fest is global as demonstrated in its sales figures.

Clearly the love fest did not exist in the generation before as demonstrated in its sales figures

PS4 rode tsunami that started from the Xbox earthquake. It was equal parts Sony coming in with better specs and MSFT having a horrible marketing plan.

There are estimated 2 billion gamers on the planet. PS Now and xcloud will be an interesting battle.

But you can say the same thing about the previous generation. Equal parts MS having an earlier launch with easier hardware and Sony having a horrible marketing plan. And despite that, PS3 eventually caught up regardless.

Keep fighting the good fight man. The 360 was a huge success for Microsoft. But let's not pretend like it's best selling console still sold less than Sony's worst ever.

The 360 being cheaper by $200 dollars was the reason it was even close.

Somebody has to . Once it was just UH, now they whole board has shifted. PS crew is getting to PC master race bad.

Console wars are good. 360 beating PS3 made PS4 a better product. Hopefully PS4 does the same to X2.

I stand by my statement in another thread though, I have more long term faith in Microsoft over Sony.
