I do kind of like the way 343 did it with Halo 5. You bought the game and they would release new maps for free.
You could earn packs or just buy them. Those packs would include cosmetic and better weapon options, however the weapon perks would only work in Warzone. Regular ranked and social PvP were a no go for weapon options, just cosmetic.
Basically free DLC from a map standpoint.

Yeah 343 has done pretty damn good with Halo 5. Typically I get bored with online shooters after a month or two, but with all of the updates they do with Halo 5 I'm still playing after 3 years.
