OK I get this but surely there is a time limit on the "selected classification" thing. can anyone just select their year to sign after high school? JUCO?

This. Some background on JB. Josh graduated high school in 94. Signed a record bonus (1.6M) with the proviso that he not play football. After about 3 years it wasn't working out as well for him as he desired, so he wanted to give football a try. He even enrolled at LSU in 97 (that started his clock) as part of his attempt to get out of the proviso, but the Marlins demanded their bonus back. Too much had been spent on taxes and other things so back to baseball he went. They let him out of his contract in 99 and he enrolled at LSU as a redshirt sophomore. After the 2000 season, he went pro with only one season of eligibility left.
