It is interesting although I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it.

There is a sensor at the bottom of the right joycon that is utilized to make the cardboard pieces interact with the Switch. It uses reflective tape on the cardboard to make it work. That's the best I can figure out. It's more responsive than I would have expected.
