RAM?

Assuming at least 8GB, that should be fine to run most games at 1080/60 for the next few years on respectable settings.

You're Gucci for 1080p/60

That 970 is still a good card, about equivalent to a gtx 1060

Edit: if you ever come across a cheap 4770k/4790k, pick it up and overclock the hell out of it

Is over clocking easy? this was my first build, with help from here on parts.

i had some shite wrong, like where case lights go, so one set stays on 24/7.

Also, upgrading that i-5, would be just taking the fan off, pulling that chip(?) out, and putting the new one in?

Yes and add some thermal paste. You have to make sure it's the same socket as the previous CPU though. Like blue said, buy one of those he mentioned.

Basically, but the CPU socket is by far the most fragile part of the system.

Very, as long as you have an aftermarket cooler and not one that came with the CPU

yeah, i have been reading and watching videos, and people are saying to find a used one.

you can get a great deal, and they have mainly been used to mine for bitcoins and the such.

looks like you can get a used 4790 for $2oo ish, compared to 500ish new.

Is going used the better deal? Price really isn't a huge deal.

I would personally switch to an AM4 motherboard like a B450 and go Ryzen. I think the Ryzen 5 2600 is around 150 and the mother board is around 75.

Though I'm not sure you can use DDR3 memory which you probably have in a B450.

That's still good for 1080p.

The 4790k is still a better CPU for games since it has better single core performance

And don't the 2nd ryzens only use ddr4?

No doubt but his GPU is still older so it's not like he's gonna be pushing super high fps anyway. I was just looking to improve the motherboard and multicore processing.

eta: I believe so on the DDR4 and that's why I questioned it in the earlier post. Just seems wasteful to me to spend 200 on a much older CPU and all the other hardware is getting dated as well.

So yes, DDR4 would have to be gotten with the board.

Ryzen 5 2600 around 150
B450 75
DDR4 2x4 3200 75
SSD 240GB 45

So around 345 for a really good upgrade.

The 4790K would be good at around 200 but eventually would need to upgrade RAM and motherboard for any type of real upgrade.

He's only going to bottleneck a 4790k maybe with a 2080ti

Upgrade your video card and should be good to go. Most games aren't limited by CPU unless you start talking 4K resolution. 4K is overkill imho.

1440p (or 2K) is the sweet spot and looks fantastic.

I'm still using the core of the rig I built 8 years ago. I've upgraded the video card twice, memory, and SSDs.

i7-2600K @ 4.6GHz
EVGA GTX 1080 Ti
16 GB DDR3
27" 144mhz 1440p Gsync monitor

This setup is crushing everything I throw at it even at max settings.

I can't wait for the Anthem demo next weekend.

Can he use ddr4 memory on that motherboard though?

No, but that makes such a minute difference in performance it doesn't really matter.

I was just thinking of a general upgrade for gaming and multicore performance with the ability to upgrade to newer CPUs when they come out.

Either way, I think a GPU upgrade would be better anyway as a gaming upgrade only. Like you said, it's only 1080p so not like it's gonna be CPU bound.
