Thoughts on atv for 12 year old

OB - my boy turns 12 this week and has outgrown the grizzly 125 that he has been riding for the last 4-5 years. I am going to look for something in the off-season and was thinking about the Recon 250. I’m thinking about the 250 because I really would like something that he can handle that would not be too heavy for him to get out from under if he rolls it. Thought about a Rancher 420 or trying to find a Rancher 350 4x4 in good shape, but these are bigger machines. Does anyone have their kids on a 250, do you regret not getting something bigger? He’s a typical 6th grader, about 90 pounds soaking wet. My plan would be for this to work for him through high school. We are currently hunting in Liberty, so the terrain is not too aggressive. Thanks for your input!

Depends on the kid.
I am super conservative w ATVs. I would think he could handle a bigger machine if he is a kid that will listen.
I have two boys. I could give one anything and the other better stay on foot

Where you located? Want to sell the 125?

Recons still only 2x4? To me that's a hard no and I'd find something in the 300 class with 4x4. Before you know it they'll be too big for the Recon and you're back to square one.

We still have a 30 y/o Suzuki 250 that I learned on when I was 7-8 years older, does everything I’ve ever needed, we have a 500 now though too

I’m in BR, yes will probably sell the grizzly but would like to find the replacement bike first. He would not be happy to be without anything.

Kawasaki has a 300 4x4 but it looks like Yamaha and Honda don’t have anything in that range. Unfortunately!!

If he is anything like I was at that age, get him the 250. Put him some grippy tires on the back and turn him loose. He will have a blast, and when he flips it on himself he won’t get smashed lol.
If he is conservative and listens then get him a 450 range atv. He will grow into it nicely.

A Honda 250 still weights 450 lbs.
If he is experienced I’m sure he could handle it but don’t think if he rolls it he is just going to kick it off like a grown man.

My Sons' 250 Recon. He is 12 and fits him well. Put the wheels and tires on for Christmas. Haven't got it stuck since.

Guy on Facebook marketplace in Holden la has a Suzuki 250 that looks brand new for $800.
That's a fine machine in your size range for $800.
As for the 250 I'm looking for one for my wife and daughter. They are plenty big enough but lightweight.
The o ly concern I've seen is loading them in the back of a truck. The light front end can get squirrelly going up the ramps and want to flip backward.
If you trailer your bikes no worries.

A 250 sized atv is right up a teens alley. I had a Yamaha 250 2x4 and went through more places than guys with the big 4x4’s did. Pulled them out many times. Light and east to get unstuck.
My dad still has it and my boys will have it when they are of age.

When my kid was 12 we went to the Louisiana Delta on their big opening day dove hunt during a tropical storm. He had his little Honda 250, the 30 or so adults had all the baddest 4x4’s and side by sides known to man. Bout 2 miles to the spot. The only bike to make it to the dove field was my kid on his little Honda 250, all the others got that gumbo mud matted on and ground to a halt. Great little bike!

I got my 8 year old a recon for Christmas this year. It’s a little big for him but he has been putting around on my 420 so he is handling it well but I don’t let him shift out of 2nd gear yet. Don’t let the 250 size scare you it is plenty bike even for an adult. Sucker flies and has surprising power. Obviously it doesn’t compare to my 420 or 550 but those recons pack a lot of power into that little package. I would have no issue jumping in it to go get a deer out or anything if it was more handy to jump on than my bigger bikes

At that age i had a big bear 350 2x4. Had some mud lites on the back and the rare times I got it stuck it was easy enough to lift up and move over. I’d say it all depends on his size. I was already nearly 6 ft tall and 200lbs at 13 so the 350 was fine. Other buddies I remember had 250s and the old Honda 300s at that age.

Thanks for all the input! I think I am going to stay on this track and look for the Recon.

That zuki 250 has probably the best power in the class motor wise.
Very nice quad for 800. You'll speed 1400-1500 on a comparable recon.
The lease we are on has a recon on it. Two adults use it. They have itp's on the rear. It goes everywhere. I'm kinda jealous sometimes.
