things that must happen for next year to be 'special'

lots of positive vibes right now on LSU football and they are justified. there are a few 'if's' that need to be realized for next season to be special. help me identify them. here are a few in no order of importance:
1) tyler shelvin continue to improve and come back ready to dominate and be a key part of the DL rotation
2) one of the two incoming rb's (if not both) needs to be ready
3) OL needs to improve. have lots of depth now. but the top 5 need to get it done. period.
4) need a better punt returner, returning to the long tradition at LSU of stellar all-SEC/all-america caliber PR.
5) cade york needs to be good. maybe not as good as cole tracy but good
im not including anything about stingley or CB's because i am assuming Stingley, Vincent, Kelvin Jospeh, Fulton, Todd Harris, etc will be great. in fact possibly better than this year considering Stingley is replacing greedy and the others all have that much more experience now
im not including chaisson because im assuming he will return and not miss a beat
im not including play calling because i am assuming with a better OL this will more or less resolve itself
im not including devin white returning because i dont expect him to, and i think with chaisson, philips, divinity, jacoby stevens, queen, baskerville, et al (and Aranda) the LB's will be great

Let the downvoted rain down, but this team isn’t winning anything important until the offense coaching staff has some major turnover.
SE is not leading this offense to a championship. It sucks but it’s true.

I'm hoping that O hires a CO offensive coordinator to work with Steve. I have no problem with running a pro/spread hybrid. I don't even have a problem with them designing it from scratch. I just want the right input.
I'm excited about this season.

I absolutely think LSU could have an incredible season next year and even make the playoffs. I think the thing that must happen is we have to have luck on our side. Every team that makes it into the playoffs had had some things fall their way.
This season Tua goes down at Bama and Hurts (who most thought for sure was going to transfer, decides to stay) is there to lead them back against Georgia. The season we won the championship with two losses, it took a lot of luck to even have a chance to make it into the NC game.

We’re an OC away from next year being “special”

Playcalling has to get better. Need more innovation on the offensive side of the ball or it will be 4 straight time Ensminger will be shut out by Bama.

John Emery needs to have a season comparable to Brossette had this year

IF (and a big IF) Wire or Rosenthal can be an effective starter, this offense has a chance to improved. The other part of this is when things get rough, will SE seemingly go full protection again? Of will he develop some “hot routes”, or outlet options for the offense.
Cade York does not necessarily have to be the man. ONE of the kickers Ned’s to be the man. I know i am splitting hairs here.
Shelving being in shape will be a huge step for this defense.
If Emery can learn pass protect, and being a release valve for Burrow, this is best for the offense. He is the biggest talent. Don’t sleep on Curry. I have high hopes for him being in the mix next year.

Aranda always has good defenses regardless of personnel. So that side of the ball isnt the issue. You pointed out the main issue, but it has to be emphasized.
The oline, which we dont appear to be improving this offseason has to be worlds better. I highly doubt it will be

Win the games we lost, that we should have won.
Florida and A$M last year, for example
Should have won both.

1) The big OT from Ferriday has to develop/dominate...or others have to get much better.
Without this, we should be better and more experienced overall, but come crunch time things don’t change a whole lot from 2018.

Fix the offense and the sky is the limit.
No more surrender plays to save face against our nemesis.

Very simple: offensive tackle play. All other ingredients are there. Secondly, staff must find a way to get players to BELIEVE they can beat Bama. They are in our heads.

Lot of assumptions there, friend. Listen, until the offense has a pulse, LSU is going nowhere. Nowhere. The LSU offense will not have a pulse so long as the O-line is weak. Moreover, LSU needs a legit OC, HC and AD....
I hope I am wrong about this. We will all see starting in September.

I’m just seeing this so very late to the thread, but in order to be “special” we have to go 11-1. Period.
10-2 is always the bar for a good season, but seeing as how we failed to reach that attainable goal in year 1 and 2 (not to mention losing out on the Sugar in 16), the window for 10-2 to mean something is already passed.
With everyone coming back and a very favorable schedule, we have to make real noise to get into the CFP and that simply won’t happen at 10-2.
If we don’t make the run in 2019 the excuses in 2020 will be endless with losing Burrow and all these other seniors.
That means maybe 2021 before we have a legit shot??
Five years after Miles was fired is just stupid to think that’s how long it would take to get back to the CFP picture.
If we get left out at 11-1 that’s ok. That’s doing everything reasonably expected to give the team and program a chance.
But 10-2 I’m sorry is just not.
It would be a nice, enjoyable season, but not a season where we actually competed for the real goals thus program has had for almost 20 years now.
To be truly special, we have to win every game but Alabama.
Then let the chips fall where they may.
And if we beat Alabama and lose to someone else we probably still win the West anyway.
11-1, lets make 2019 special
