Comparing Burrow and Mett's first seasons as starter...

Like Burrow this year, in 2012 Mett came in as a high profile transfer with a lot of hype. The expectations from the fans were sky high. Just like this year probably unrealistic.
After what he did in 2013, his 2012 season seems to be a disappointment in the memory of a lot of fans - me included until I looked up the stats and saw that Mett's 2012 was actually the second most yardage by an LSU QB since Jamarcus Russell's '06 season. That's of course comparing him to a lot of bad QB play that we've had since then. But prior to the season I told myself that I would be happy if Burrow put up numbers similar to Mett's first year as a starter. After all, Mett was in the program for a full year before starting and Burrow had just a couple of months to get acclimated to the team, staff, and playbook. Here are the stats:
2012 Mett: 13 games, 207-352 58.8%, 2609 yards, 12 TD, 7 Int, 128.34 rating
2018 Burrow: 13 games, 219-379 57.8%, 2894 yards, 16 TD, 5 Int, 133.21 rating
Granted, I understand a lot of people will say Burrow had 7OTs in the A&M Game. But in those 7 ot's he was only 4-6 for 71 yards and 1 TD. He did most of his work on the ground.
And while time will tell, it can also be reasonably argued that Mett had so much more to work with in 2012. His RB's:
Jeremy Hill
Kenny Hilliard
Michael Ford
Spencer Ware
Alfred Blue
His WR's:
OBJ
Jarvis Landry
Kadron Boone
James Wright
Russell Shepherd
His OL:
Dworaczyk
La'el
Williford
Elliot Porter
PJ Lonergan
Chris Faulk
Alex Hurst
We can only hope that 2019 Burrow is as good as 2013 Mett but comparing their first years under center I think we have a good reason to have high expectations for next season.

That 2012 OL was rough
Lost both tackles for the reason
RG for the season

2012 was killed by injuries and the receivers couldn’t catch a cold.
But I’ve posted regularly since September about Burrow having a season like Mett’s 2012 where he comes on late and jump starts into the next season.

All made NFl Rosters, and I think 3 were drafted (if not 4)

Burrow should have a better supporting cast in 19’ and a year of SEC experience under his belt, expect a record setting season

Burrow also had 399 rushing yards.

All this PLUS burrow can run, Something Mett was never able to do. Add in the fact that burrow has been on campus for only 3 months before starting his first game at LSU and Mett had been here the entire previous spring and season. Burrow will make a huge leap next year.

And 7td's. He accounted for 23 TDs this year. The same as Fournette in 2015. To find a QB with more you would need to go back to Flynn's 2007.

Oops, yep you're right.

Solid thread. Burrow exceeded all reasonable expectations and provides cause for great optimism in 2019.

Geeze I forget how good that roster was. 3 NFL rb starters, 3 NFL wr starters with insane online talent. Such a shame the defense was not up to standard those years, they were good but not the suffocating defense we like to see.

We passed for 325 more yards this year than last year.
We ran for more than 400 fewer yards this year
I think an uprade at RB will lead to overall production
No knock on Brosette, he far exceeded what I thought he could do. Just was meant to be a change of pace back

This is the amazing part that most people overlook. The time Mett had to build timing with two of LSU's best receivers in recent memory and a year to learn the offense vs Burrow's on the job learning the offense while also on the job learning the receivers route running abilities. Burrow is the better QB.

Thanks for laying all of that out for us. You really are a Supreme Beef.

Brossette was surprisingly good this year. He had always had a problem with fumbles but he held onto the ball pretty well all season this year.

Another stat I just looked up... Burrow's total offense this season of 3293 is the second most all time for LSU behind only Rohan's 2001.
