Colorado Mardi Gras Skiing

Going ski/snowboarding over Mardi Gras break. Booked flights now just trying to figure out which would be the best place to stay. Been looking at keystone, seems to be a good bang for your buck type place. I have done Breck and liked it but also a little expensive and want to try another spot. Figured I would see if anyone had any suggestions on here before we decided on a place.

Fly into Gunnison and do Crested Butte

Keystone isn't a town, there's nothing to do there other than ski. Nightlife and restaurants are basically nonexistent.
Stay in Breck, ski Keystone, ABasin, Breck, Copper. Or stay in Frisco which is in the middle.
Crested Butte is also awesome, or Steamboat.

Copper is decent bang for your buck and a quick drive from Frisco/Silverthorne area. Plus, as the poster above noted, everything is decently close from Frisco except Vail/BC.

Even Vail is only about 30 mins from Frisco, if the interstate is dry. If it's storming, much slower going, if Vail Pass is even open. They close it a lot during storms because of wrecks/conditions.

Keystone isn’t much cheaper than Breck. I’d go to Copper. 5 minutes from Frisco, 25 minutes to Vail.

Good point. Just need to keep an eye on the weather. You can get back to Frisco at the other ones if a storm comes through. Wouldn't want to do Battle Mountain/Tennessee Pass (hell, if Vail Pass is closed I doubt that's really an option) to get back in the snow.

Telluride. Not just because I live there. The slopes, ambiance and people can't be beat.

the restaurant choices in Copper suck though. It is conveniently located.

Are you talking about i70 itself or some other road? I will be driving to Vail next Thursday and snow is in the forecast. If it's closed is that like an all day thing or just for a few hours?

Depends how bad it is but usually a few hours. I go to the mountains every weekend & it’s rarely a problem. Use Cotrip.org for road updates

It's I70. Altitude goes up over Vail Pass, so the roads can get a little sketchy and there are elevated roadways on the way into Vail. The big thing is the like 20-30 miles between the Copper Mountain/Leadville exit and the first Vail exit. No great ways around either, since you'd have to go over Fremont and Tennessee pass to bypass it.

Depends on how long it takes to clear but it takes a pretty good snow storm to be a long issue. Watch Loveland Pass/Tunnels too for closures.
