I haven’t had any frost. But yeah, the temp needs to rise!

To yall baws who have had success planting citrus, what is your method? I have planted two in the front yard, two years ago, and have yielded two dead trees. My thoughts is that proximity to water oaks may be sucking all the nutrients and water away from them, and also that nuclear winter we had two winters ago. I'd like to try and plant some on the side of my house where i have full sun and there's no water oaks. I guess dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, and then should I fill it in with some store bought top soil? Anything in particular? Or should I container grow for a few years until it gets bigger, then plant? Thanks
