Catholic is more of a designation than a specific religion. The religion is Christianity, and the church is Catholic, i.e. “universal.” There are over 30,000 denominations that have broken off from Catholicism since the Reformation.

I guess I'd word that quite differently. I'd say the shared faith is Christianity, belief in God, and His son Jesus as Savior.
Religions are a construct of man, and therefore corrupt, for the most part. That would be where your Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Presbyterians what have you come in.

Catholicism should have never broken off from the true church (i.e., the Orthodox Church).
