My personal issue is that govt workers are not treated same as private industry in terms of productivity etc. You can get away with all types of stuff in govt jobs that you could never get away with in private jobs. Poor performers are carried and promoted as an example.

And vice versa.

I've worked in my profession in both the public and private sectors. One thing that really surprised me about the private sector was how often I was 'asked' to do clearly unethical work. I was never asked to do anything unethical when I worked in the public sector.

As far as dead heads go, yes, there seem to be more in the public sector, but that doesn't mean there are none in the private sector. In government, there are laws against nepotism, but not in industry. Frequently it's the son or the in-law that's the dead head and gets carried by the company. I left one company when the dead head son took over after the owner retired. Talk about a clusterfrick. I believe he ended up selling the company his father built.

But in terms of productivity, I believe you generally get what you pay for. There are idealists in gov't that are highly productive, but on the whole, public workers are paid lower than their private counterparts.

This is a huge issue, but it starts with hiring practices. When people can manipulate applications and lie about qualifications, get hired, and go through a probationary period before they are figured out...at which point it's too late to fire them because of fear of a lawsuit...you have a problem.

Also, all they want to do when a problem gets too bad is put people on opportunity to improve plans over, and over, and over again.

There are good people in the government, just like in the private sector. They just get overshadowed by the bad.

I know a woman that just assumes anyone working for the government will eventually turn into a bureaucrat that sits on their hands and mooches off the public. Just like every other public employee she's know. I don't understand how someone can be that cynical about anyone working in a particular sector.

You're naive if you think this doesn't happen in private industry.
