in order to unlock characters it says you need at least a one star rating, what the hell does this mean?

When you win a cup you get a rating (usually a letter, but I did get a star once so far on 50cc). After that they start letting you unlock characters when you win a cup. So far I have King Boo and Rosilina

I got a few two stars rating, but mostly one star ratings. Can't seem to get that damn three stars rating. 
So far I unlocked King Boo, Rosalina, and Drybones. I'm forgetting someone though.

I have three characters unlocked and I barely play. Guess I just picked the right races. I have the two you mentioned but also this pink dinosaur thing. Not sure what her name is though. Cant remember

6800 and you don't know how to powerslide....how in the hell have you done that?
I can't get first in a race unless i powerslide all the corners and boostjump all the jumps... Just jump into a turn and hold b..not that hard.

Guy at work who is over 9,000 online gave me a few tips.
1. Powerslide whenever possible. Its suppossively gives you a boost in speed when you straighten out. Its like something with the brake them gunning it.
2. Whenever going over a hills, do a trick (ie. press the down d-pad button. It gives you turbos and you can just fly over the hills.
3. Don't make a move until about 2 laps into the race. Otherwise the AI will make you come back to the pack with blue shells, red shells, etc.
4. Never jump out in the lead to begin with unless your a pro and can distance yourself through straight knowledge of the games tricks and courses.
5. Learn step 1.

I hate how powersliding is necessary for the Kart games. Sliding around corners is one thing, but the speed boost pisses me off, it doesn't make any sense.

is powersliding done when playing on manual? ive yet to figure that out. I have beat all the 150 cups yet i still see no star ratings, am i missing something? is it an online thing.

Blue spark and gold spark
I can blue spark almost any turn, but it is the gold spark that really gives a good boost

I have a tendency not to make any mistakes by falling off the track and stuff. I think I'm also pretty good about getting out in front and placing banana peels at good choke points to cushion my leads. I also make damn sure I get the jump boosts at every available opportunity.
I need to learn how to powerslide though, because on tracks like Luigi's circuit, I have to play mistake free and get a little lucky to get 1st. I'll still make Top 4 every time, but first is hard if there is a good powerslider on a course like that.
Powersliding requires me to change my controls which I got used to. Gonna have to force myself over to it.

I'm not sure if you can gold spark with the bikes (at least, I couldn't pull it off). That would be an advantage of karts over bikes. Then again, you can get a wheelie boost with the bikes whenever you've got somewhat of a straightaway to work with.

Not that great.
I give it a 7.5/8 and that's if you're playing with a bunch of friends. It the steering wheel has a learning curve of about 10 mins (2/3 races)
It's fun but IMO not really worth it.
Weapons are amazingly unbalanced. Some really really suck (single banana) and some are game changing (big bullet: tuns your kart/bike into a giant bullet you really don't control. You hit everything ahead of you and go as fast as you would if you had a star for about 10-15 secs. Can take you from 12th to 4th easily)

and you can change it in multiplayer at least
