lol this is so fricking dumb The obvious better way to handle it is to just freeze the gain at the point of merger.

The point is not having to manually manage this. I’d say just do a manual fix at the end of the year rather than try to track this. I’m also ok with just assuming it’s sold and the money is frozen.

What if, for example, WTRH gets bought. It's down over 94% YTD. But even if the acquiring company's stock really takes off after the buyout but poor FunronPete is locked in at a -94% loss for the year.
That would suck, too.
