Honest question, haven't they always been? I mean even back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s usually only 2 of the bowl games meant anything substantial. For example, if the Orange Bowl had the AP #1 playing the AP #3 (or UPI) and the Sugar Bowl had the #2 playing the #4...those were the only two that meant shite. The rest were just for bragging rights. What has changed? I've been wondering for a few years now where this attitude is coming from. To me, it has always been like this.

no, they determine your final poll ranking and are thus very important games. Also, the coaches, players, fans, and media don't treat them like exhibition games or they wouldn't react the way they do with each bowl win or bowl loss nor would the polls.
