The ball is in player possession when a player has the ball firmly in his grasp by holding or controlling it while contacting the ground inbounds.
All this nonsense about the knee touching the ground is absurd. He never had control (posssession) until after the knee left the ground. If 3 fingers on a ball is now possession, then the rules of the game have been fundamentally changed.

And the review overturned the call on the field. Unbelievable.

Finally someone is making some sense. It was a fumble. People are acting like it’s a special situation because it was a snap.

The only thing I can say is he possibly grabbed the ball and picked it up with his right hand (kind of palmed it). He may have been in possession of it with the knee down but it is absolutely inconclusive at the very least. How that can be overturned is an absolute sham.

I thought this was going to be about the fumble.

It is a weird interpretation by the announcer that all he has to do is touch it. That would change how all fumbles are ruled recovered. Just put your knee down and touch it and the play ends and you get possession. Genius.

I just want to hear it from the horse's mouth (REC) that touching the ball was a possession, but catching it with 3 steps isn't....

Exactly. No scramble for the ball to get control. The first person to put a finger on it who has his leg or knee or butt on the ground and the play is over. Again what they ruled implies a fundamental change in the game. It was totally absurd.

uh, I hate to break the bad news to you, but Mond was the ONLY person to have possession. He never lost it to anyone else. Once his knee hit, he was down

On a punt or kickoff, the player never has to pick up the kicked ball. Just touch it and kneel, and the play is blown dead.

If that’s all it takes then there are A LOT of “fumble recoveries” that need to be overturned.

Every time a guy laying on the ground touches a fumble, boom, dead ball and possession to the toucher. Is that how this works?

Once he dropped the ball ir fumbled — he lost possession. No one had possession. Have to re-establish possession before you can be down.

Would our muffed punt return have been a dead ball then?

He had possession then Lost possession then Regained possession. When he regained possession his knee was not down. By your definition a players who fumbles and then recovers his own fumble never lost Possession. As someone else said if this is the new rule, a whole lot of fumble recoveries were wrong.

That’s a good question. Did he have his knees on the ground when he touched the ball?

That’s not even the worst call of the game. The catch and fumble in overtime is unbelievable. If that wasn’t a catch then what the frick is?

So everytime a lineman falls on a loose ball it is instant recovery by this definition, correct? Doesn't matter if the ball squirts out under his body...his knees are down thus making the touching of the ball a recovery. Correct?

When punt or kick returners bobble the ball, and pick it up and then run with it, are those listed as fumbles in the stats?
