I know everyone will disagree, but the USC job is not your father’s USC.
While USC is certainly an A-list job, the rise/separation of the SEC and Big10, and the relative fall of the Pac-12, has diminished that job a bit. USC is a lot like Notre Dame in the context of TV... when they were the only schools on TV, they were the “it” jobs... now every school is on TV every week, and their monopoly on college football has dissipated.
Again, not saying USC is a bad job, it absolutely is a good job. But it is not one of the Top3 jobs in the country now like it use to be in decades past.
Now is it a job that you should be able to have almost “automatic” success in? Yes. But the prestige of the job itself has fallen over the years from what it once was.
A very good argument could be made that PennSt is a better job than USC. The fact that’s even a discussion/argument should tell you all you need to know.
The expectations at USC are ridiculous considering the current perception of that program as an “afterthought” in CFB.

You misunderstand me. I didn’t say USC isn’t a prestigious job. I didn’t say USC is a bad job.
I merely said it’s not as big of a job as it once was.
It’s still up there, and it’s Still a great job. But it’s not one of the Top3 jobs in the country.
If it was, it would have no problems getting one of the Top5 coaches in college football to go there. When is the last time they snagged a Saban, Meyer, Stoops, Harbaugh, etc (or any one of the handful of universally accepted at-the-time top coaches in CFB)? Their last 5 coaches this century are Helton, Sarkisian, Kiffin, at-the-time mediocre Carroll (that happenned to work out great), and Paul Hackett.
My only point, is for those that argue USC is the best, or one of the 3 best jobs in the country.... that is clearly just not true anymore. It just doesn’t have the same appeal as some of the “all football all the time nothing else matters” programs in the country.
