Because they have a vanity that goes along with their status. Also, these are people that generally don't come from money, so they have to satisfy their lust for it and the only way to get more is to stay in the spotlight.

Yeah, this notion that you should be entitled to push basically billionaire status after being president has turned things so oddly crass.
