A spread offense is only as good as the OC making the play calls and the QB carrying out the orders effectively.
ETA: Unlike the NFL, most college teams are still a run first program. Once the teams that have stellar defense become pass first, they are going to reign for long time. I find a viable passing game opens the running game much more than the run game opens up the pass (see New Orleans Saints).
