Pain in the hip? Any numbness or tingling running down her leg? I’ve been through three back surgeries because of issues at L4-L5 (“small of the back”). If either of those apply screw the middleman and get in to see a neurologist. If the pain is that severe they ought to get an MRI done. For my first surgery is was a really small incession and they simply shave the disc where it was pinching the nerve. It’s a really safe, minor procedure if you follow the recovery orders. I was back on campus a month after mine. Good Luck!

Just out of curiosity, why did you have three surgeries if you're first surgery was a microdiscectomy? I am dealing with a herniated disc at L4-5 and am considering options so I am just wondering why you had to have additional procedures.
