The problem with the argument that Christians individually should take care of the poor, sick, etc is that is not how the Bible shows Israel was called. The idea was that the people of Israel as a tribe would be an example into the world. The idea that there would be different requirements for the people of Israel than for the nation of Israel is not something they would have recognized. They were one in the same.
It’s also interesting to me that people are mad about taking prayer out of school and the like because we are a “Christian nation” then don’t want us to act like that type of nation with the poor. Odd to me.

In the OT, the Israelites did not clothe and feed indigent Philistines or outside needy people groups.
In the NT, the call to help your neighbor was not tied to government action or the ruling authority. It was a personal command in your community.
If people were perfect, Communism would be the most Christian solution for a society. The whole fallen nature thing keeps getting in the way unfortunately.
You have to realize that having the government force others to redistribute wealth was not what Jesus was talking about.
