As another reader has said...check timing belt and water pump to see if they've been changed out. Also check out all the power steering lines for leaks...they are a pain due to the length of them (and not cheap).
If 4WD see if the 4WD actuator on the tail end of the transmission is leaking. Once it's leaking..there's no stopping it other than to get a new one. It's not cheap. The reason it leaks is somewhat due to the seal design. I think the next Gen 4Runner changed it up.
We had an 03 V8 SR5 4WD version that had over 170K miles on it and until totaled ran great with the exception of the radiator developing a hole, power steering lines developing leaks (metal fatigue) and the 4WD actuator. Dashboard was replaced under recall as well due to cracking.

What everyone else has said, and I'll add to look in the radiator for signs of the "strawberry milkshake". Transmission cooler is inside the radiator. They can bust and fill your cooling system with transmission fluid. You're almost guaranteed to have problems from here out if that has happened. If it's good and you buy it, I recommend adding an aftermarket external trans cooler and bypass the stock one.
