Bully got hit by a bus and other stupid Miss St facts.

In 1939, Miss State's first live mascot, Bully the Bulldog, got hit by a campus bus. To honor that crushed dog, State changed the official mascot from "Maroons" to "Bulldogs" twenty one years later.
Mississippi State missed an entire season of football because of a yellow fever epidemic in 1897. Contrary to popular opinion, yellow fever, is not named after Mississippi State.
Mississippi State was a pioneer in the "graduate transfer" market. In 1944, Freshman All-American Thomas "Shorty" McWilliams transferred from Starkville to West Point. This was a popular thing to do at the time because playing football and studying at West Point meant you didn't have to get drafted into service as an enlisted man. After two years of study at West Point, McWilliams was offered $15,000, a car, and $300/month salary by a State booster to return to Starkville for his final season. West Point of course objected vehemently, but the US Army was no match for the corruption of the SEC. "Shorty" ultimately took the money and ran.

Fun Fact:
From the early 90's to 2013 States only win against LSU was in Stark Vegas when Rod Gibson knee crawled into the endzone from the 3 yard line and the refs STILL called it a touchdown. To this day it remains, WITHOUT EQUAL, the worst call I have ever seen on a football field. His knees hit TWICE before he crossed the goal line.
Bonus points awarded if anyone can find video of this play on the internet. I've looked multiple times and have never found any highlights from that game.
