They are literally driven by one thing. Creating controversial tops and articles that will generate the clicks that will bring in advertisers. Modern news and media is terrible. They discovered its better for them to be quick and have hot takes than accurate and thoughtful. It's literally the plot of Anchorman 2.

Yes but there is a difference between victim-hood mentality and not wanting your Alma Mater or State to be measured by a minority yelling STTDB at opponents.
It's not in good fun either. Tiger Bait is. Its non-insulting. It isn't overly vulgar either.
People who defend the words that are used as "in good fun" or "don't be over-sensitive" are trying to normalize their own immaturity. and its sad.
