I've been with more than a few over the past decade. It can certainly be intimidating for a lot of reasons. I think losing weight and joining a gym has not only been on the top "New Year's Resolutions" list, but it has been a cop out.
I'm not in anyway saying it's wrong to want to lose wait or join a gym(if anything it's courageous) because it's inspiring. I'm just saying it's a lot of pressure these days. I think we all struggle with our own self image and in the end all we want is some validation.
I commend all who strive to better themselves in life and in fitness, as I'm working on myself. I think one of the hurdles we face is accepting that working on ourselves is a process and lol I'm like a lot of people.....I want the reward NOW....but life isn't like that. Rome wasn't built overnight.....either will our dreams. Anyway, I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts and more importantly some gym stories with an inspiring now and then transformation.

My biggest thought is to enjoy the process and not to view it solely in terms of the end result.
I played basketball through college. I then went to law school and got sedentary and way too heavy.
Finding and enjoying powerlifting and strongman motivated me because they engage my competitive nature. I enjoy the process of challenging myself and striving to better my totals.
The thing that engages someone will vary person to person. Strive to find it.
Thought 2, get in there and do stuff. Too many people wait for the right time. The right time is now and motivation follows the initial actions, not thebother way around.

EarPlugs are your best friend.
As soon as you walk through the door have your favorite tunes flowing through you.
Whatever you do don't jump on one of the stupid diets that end after 2 weeks or 30 days etc...go to bodybuilding.com and read some articles. It's one of the few places that has more information than BS and it's a great stepping stone to learn information as a beginner.
Last but not least, realize that it's not the end goal that means everything, it's the journey.

Exercise should be something you view as necessary and imperative as eating. Find some form of exercise that you love and make it a part of your life/routine. Soon you’ll feel lost, or down if you miss it for some reason. I gained 50lbs with my last pregnancy, despite working out right up to delivery, but I was right back to my routine at 6wks postpartum. I was back at my fighting weight within 6 months. I love exercise classes (very dependent on instructor quality) and love to challenge myself, find what motivates you and stick with it.

I started working out in a gym when I was 18. As a girl I get it...it was so intimidating, but I learned how to lift and worked at it. 35 and I’m still at it. Consistency is key. It’s just become a part of my life, like eating or brushing my teeth. I’ve always enjoyed it, but lately I’ve been working out in order to be able to be a stronger hiker, and recently have decided that I want to start climbing also, so my gym time will be spent working toward a goal. This is the first time I’ve ever worked out to achieve something outside of the gym, and it feels so good!!
So my advice is to think of things that working out will help you to accomplish or improve upon, and focus on those things!

Not at all I go on there. Its just most of the information they give is for a very advanced lifter and marketed to the begginner. Its the opposite of what it should be.
