re: Dog advice

Boston Terrier!! I've had two and they are the best! Great personalities, hilarious, but also super cuddly and loving!

I volunteer with a French Bulldog rescue and they are so prone to health problems...it's really sad. I would recommend planning financally for health problems down the road with a Frenchie...hopefully it's not needed, but if so you are prepared. So many end up in rescue because their owners just can't handle it.

Nice....Amangiri has their own Via Ferrata that is only open to resort guests - I'd definitely check that out if I were staying there!

In response to a few of the other replies:

There is now a Colt Grill in the Village of Oak Creek, so no need to go to Cottonwood!

There is now a Shuttle Service for a few of the more popular trailheads (SedonaShuttle.com) - be sure to check it out, especially if you are planning on hiking Cathedral, Soldiers Pass, or Devil's Bridge.

Cathedral Rock is currently closed (the upper part of the trail to the saddle) for Forest Service construction - just a heads up. I believe construction is set to wrap up by April 30th.

Elote Cafe is fantastic, but reservations are hard to come by - you might get lucky, or you can always try calling day-of for cancellations.

It’s a 4 hr drive from PHX to the GC. A round trip is not something you’ll want to do in one day.

Just got back from Sedona today. Stay there. It’s a great jumping off point to everywhere and it’s gorgeous! 2 hr drive to GC. Less than hr to Cottonwood and Jerome. Great hiking trails, spas, dining, and shopping. Warning: It will be cold there and up at the GC. These are high elevation locations. 4000-6000 ft.

If you want warmer weather along with college visits, stay at a resort in Scottsdale. Visit ASU and U of Arizona in Tucson (2 hr drive) from there.

Agree with all of this. Or fly into Phoenix, spend a night in Scottsdale, then head north to Sedona. Bring layers and you will be just fine! There is so much to do within 2 hours any direction of here!

avoid southbound 89 around downtown...at all times!

Ha :rotflmao: So true! It's especially bad right now because of construction which, hopefully, will alleviate some of it...but who knows. I avoid that area altogether unless I'm going up the canyon.

Sedona. It's roughly 2 hours from Phoenix and 1 hour from Flagstaff, and you have to go 30 minutes to Cottonwood for the nearest WalMart, ha! The weather is amazing, it does get hot in the summer, but not nearly as hot as Phoenix AND it cools down at night, and it snows in the winter, but not as much as Flag - there are actually four very enjoyable seasons. It IS a tourist town, but it's actually not bad living here as long as you learn when to avoid the roads, which isn't as inconvenient as you might think. If you are a nightlife person it's probably not the best place for you, unless you are ok driving a little way into Flag or Phoenix.
Recently I've been noticing that alot of foods taste sweeter to me - even things like bacon and eggs. Has anyone else experienced this or know why it happens?

I will say that since I've been Keto my sweet tooth has pretty much disappeared - I never imagined that I could go without sweets, but I just don't want or crave them anymore - even when I'm surrounded by them.

If you do Devil's Bridge you might have better luck doing it during the week, as it gets VERY crowded on the weekends. Always, the earlier the better. You really can't go wrong with any hiking in Sedona, it's beautiful everywhere. You can make a loop with Soldier's Pass, Brins Mesa and Jordan Trail that is very scenic and pretty easy. West Fork Trail is also great and would be beautiful in the fall!

I second Elote as a must-go - maybe go during the week, or earlier in the evening...I've waited over 2 hours before! Mariposa is more upscale, but great if you want a nicer evening. Hudson, Hillside, Creekside...lots of different options for dining.
I've been following a Keto diet for a few weeks now - I'm not tracking it religiously, but have plugged random days into Carb Manager and I'm right on point. I'm pretty small already, so one thing I've noticed is that Ive had to increase my calorie intake to combat weight loss. One really great thing I've noticed is that my lower back, which typically hurts, has not hurt recently and I've been able to lift more and push harder in the gym and other athletic activities. I feel great and have great energy. I started just as an experiment to see how my body would respond and I love it!

I do have a question - is anyone familiar with Yak butter and where you can get/order it?!
Highly recommend seeing Free Solo....it’s incredible what he did. He put years into studying the route, practicing, journaling it...I guess it’s about as “safe” as you can do something like that. The film starts off with him making it to the top...even so, your heart is racing and hands are sweating throughout. The ‘boulder problem’ was the scariest part for me...and for the people watching it seems!

Lots of options - just depends on what you like, really! Tons of hiking around the area, and yes, if you've never been Sedona is a great, easy day trip. I've lived here 4 months now and have probably gone 6 times. Scottsdale probably has the most concentrated variety of great restaurant and nightlife options, but so do other areas...again, it just depends on your preferences!

Yes! Thank you! That’s the area I was thinking of! I have lots of friends who live there and I really it!

Along Indian School (from about 36th to 44th), up to Camelback and just south of Indian School, is a decent area for young professionals - plenty of restaurants and such, but still close to Scottsdale. Obviously hit or miss so definitely check out any place/area before moving.

There really is so much to do here, depending on what her interests are. I'm really into hiking/outdoors, and there are tons of places around Phoenix to explore for that, and like others have said, there are many day trips from the valley - Prescott, Jerome, Sedona (my fav), Flagstaff, Tucson...and there are lots of relatively close weekend trips too. It really just depends on what she WANTS to do!

In!

Looked like people were still lined up to vote here a few minutes ago...I thought the polls closed at 7?

I don’t know much of the background, but Cindy McCain spoke at the GOP rally last night in Prescott.

I voted straight R. I haven’t been here long but people don’t seem to be as outwardly vocal about their politics as in TX. I have a good feeling about McSally.

re: Any Gym Members?

Posted by Desiderita01 on 10/15/18 at 10:52 pm
I started working out in a gym when I was 18. As a girl I get it...it was so intimidating, but I learned how to lift and worked at it. 35 and I’m still at it. Consistency is key. It’s just become a part of my life, like eating or brushing my teeth. I’ve always enjoyed it, but lately I’ve been working out in order to be able to be a stronger hiker, and recently have decided that I want to start climbing also, so my gym time will be spent working toward a goal. This is the first time I’ve ever worked out to achieve something outside of the gym, and it feels so good!!

So my advice is to think of things that working out will help you to accomplish or improve upon, and focus on those things!
It will be a great news day when McSally wins!!! :nana:
I used to live in a neighborhood where witchcraft was celebrated and Christianity was mocked.

They also loved Beto...go figure

Oakhurst would be a good option if you want to be in Fort Worth. It’s a cute little neighborhood just outside (NE) of downtown, and the Race Street area is being revitalized so there are exciting things happening over there. It’s one of the areas I would have considered buying a house if I was still there.

Recently moved to AZ and I’ve, admittedly, never voted in my life, but I’ve already studied the ballot and can’t wait to vote for McSally!
