There were more Cherokee than most tribes, and they mixed with whites more than most tribes.

Because they were Southeastern, one of the first recorded...became part of popular imagination and lore.
Traded with the English in Virginia...

People like to also claim Navajo because they are seen as peaceful, corn-growing, clay pot makers.

Nobody in politics says, I am descended from the Sioux or Commanche.

They don't want to be associated with war ravaging tribes that wanted to kill and enslave the other plains Indians...because that ruins the narrative that the 500 Nations were all just happy-go-lucky peaceful co-existing when a couple of white guys with muskets showed up with ponies and ruined Xanadu.

The Cherokee were considered as one of the "Civilized" Tribes.
They were farmers and had their own written language.
