She's using her natural accent. And that's fine, but it really does seem like they play up the accents on this show compared to other British shows. I don't think it's an accident, because they've always made jokes about regions. And I think it's part of the diversity agenda to show diversity in UK regions and make sure every region knows they're represented.
But it's like if we were watching Breaking Bad and they had someone with a thick Cajun accent talking to someone from the Appalachians. In real life, most of us drop our accents when talking to people we don't know. It would be a tiny bit hard to follow along at times.

About an hour or so after I posted this an interview with the new Doctor on Colbert's show popped up on my FB feed. In it she talked about how even the people behind the scenes asked if she could tone it down (to which she said no in a fashion that led me to think she's never learned that particular skill).
Oh well, if the show is good enough I'll struggle through it ;)
