Punt catch security and being a dangerous punt returner are not mutually exclusive.

This thread is basically in response to all of the people who are happy about Giles being our punt returner because he has good hands and knows when to field a punt and when to let one bounce into the endzone (something Chark had trouble with).
My question is, why are you and why does LSU consistently seem to settle at punt returner?
Giles has good hands but seems to have a sloooow first step.
Chark had decent hands, and did have the monster return against Auburn, but he also had some TERRIBLE games where he fielded punts inside the 5yd line and in general just made bad punt fielding decisions.
Tre White had several punt returns (both against Syracuse and some other chump) but if you go back and watch the tape in SEC play he was very avg if not below avg as a punt returner.
I find it hard to believe that we don't have a guy on this team with a skill set closer to Dominick Davis or Skyler Green before he got hurt. Both had good hands, made good decisions and were a nightmare to defend. A good punt returner is such a weapon and I feel like LSU mostly throws in the towel and just goes for sure handedness.
Thoughts?
Secondary topic, am I over-exaggerating how slow Giles appears?

He didn’t look fast VS Auburn
And he let a few roll VS SELU

Ball security seems to be a point of emphasis for this staff. I'm fine with having a guy field punts without giving me a heart attack. I also believe he probably is our best option and we will see some good returns soon

I’d love to have a legit threat returning punts but it’s nice knowing he won’t muff any

I agree. I think he looks slow(even as a receiver). I thought he would be quick even if he’s not a barn burner. I’m also surprised we don’t have someone that could be electric and sure handed as well.

who should we have returning punts? Seems there just isn't a Chark on the team this year.
I can't even think of one player on the team this season who would be thought of as 'electric'
Justin Jefferson is surely more 'electric' than Giles and seems pretty sure handed.
what about Kirklin or Vincent or Derrick Dillon?

Dillon is extremely fast AND gets to top speed seemingly within a step and a half. I'd love to see him at PR.

Just looked at some stats, of course those do not take into account fair catches and balls not fielded. Gile only has 3 returns for 46 yards. 15.33 yards average. That ranks him at 59th overall but (If I counted right) he is tied for 26th with players with at least 3 returns (1 per game is how I came up with three).
Not Punt return superstar numbers but solid enough for me to wait a couple of games and see if he can break a few off.

Have you seen guys fielding punts in the NFL? Even at that level there are very few dangerous returners and a lot of muffs.

quote:yes. Giles is more than adequately fast. He has returned like two punts for God sake

Hell I looked it up, he is averaging 15 yards a return. If that is true the OP is a loon
