In recent years in MotoGP, some of the backmarker teams charged for the ride - instead of being paid by the team, the rider had to pay to ride for that team. The rider would earn his money through sponsors. Not sure if this is still occurring since a couple new factories have joined the grid.

In F1 it's not quite that institutionalized but some drivers do sort of pay their own way, or bring sponsor money to the team. Lance Stroll currently driving for Williams, is that way. His father dumped a bunch of money into the team. (But then he bought a different team so it's only a matter of time before Stroll leaves Williams for his dad's team.) I think Sergio Perez has some financial backing as well. And I'm pretty sure that Pastor Maldonado did too when he was in F1.
