In his talk about the eye he mentions that melatonin is produced during the day via the eyes. It is then released at night which helps you sleep.

That cycle gets screwed up when we don't get enough sunlight exposure during the day.

The information of the presence of light is transmitted through eye cells, and that is the only function. The actual production happens in the brain (pineal gland).
