actually it is not, not if the the kid was already in the school and it was not used as an inducement. Many private schools have programs(legal) to help families in economic distress with tuition.

Does anyone know why his dad was fired?

That offer being made after the Dad was fired, is surely an inducement to stay, which is also against the rules.

Why would the school fire the dad, then later on offer him a volunteer coaching assignment?

The problem is the line between "legal" aid and "unallowed" aid is insanely thin and gray.
