What did you think was going to happen afterwards?

Well. It was pretty up in the air afterwards because it wasn’t 100% known who actually masterminded the plot. Was it a nation (Iran, Russia, Iraq)? Was it terrorists?

The government hunkered down and hardened any potential targets and was basically ready to counterattack anything the looked like a threat. They were looking for the culprits, but didn’t announce it officially immediately.

For those few days, it was very frustrating not to have an enemy to lay it on.

At the time, Al-Qaeda wasn’t well known. The prior list of suspects ranged from Hezbollah, Hamas, the PLO, you name it. It took time to understand what Al-Qaeda was up to all those years in Afghanistan.

I think it took about 3~4 days, but soon Osama Bin Laden was a household name and we started piecing together the who, hows and whys of it all.

Even then, it was still many months before Bush announced our “response” (i.e. bomb the shite out of Afghanistan) on St Patrick’s Day 2002.

I bought a newspaper on Sept 12th. I still have it to remember the chaos those bastards brought on our great country.

Bush wrote in his diary that night that they thought it was Bin Laden. They knew pretty much when it happened who it was.

Al Qeada wasn’t a household name to every American in 2001 but Bin Laden was after the embassy and USS Cole bombings in 1998 and 2000.
