Rivers at their high point really aren't beautiful. The water is dirty and most of the bank is covered up, also a lot of debris like sticks and dead plants. Especially out west.

Most waterfalls in the west are best during mid summer to fall. When the water is cleaner, clearer, and within their lower banks so there are exposed rocks and what not.
