Plaquemines Parish to charge hunting fees on parish-owned land outside the levees

Just heard about this on a talk radio show.
I do not know enough about it.
I bet there someone on this board that knows more about it.
Seems like they will hurt some businesses that depend on sportsman coming into the parish buying gas, groceries, and other misc items.

Ordinance 18-41,which was sponsored by Councilman Jeff Edgecombe and passed unanimously on April 26, currently stipulates that fishermen would also have to sign the agreement and pay the fee to fish on parish property.

I think the whole permit thing is a bad idea. but the article says they're going to work to amend the ordinance to only apply to deer and duck hunters, so fishermen wouldn't need to buy a permit.
I do like that they want to restrict mud boats that tear up the marshes though.

I feel like the real reason they want to ban mud motors is to stop people from trespassing. Just my 0.02. As far as permits go on the hunting side, it is absolutely outrageous to charge residents $50 to hunt in their own backyard. Not to mention the $250 for a nonresident. All this is a money grab aimed at politicians pockets.

Most parishes do not leave their parish lands as free range... .most lease it out.......50 and 250 is a bargain...
Check the balance sheet of vermillion and cameron parish school boards...

I asked in the other thread but didn't get a response, how much down there is owned by the parish vs the state vs fed? Just looking at the map you've got a state WMA and a NWR that take up big chunks of the marsh. Is Plaquemine's saying they call the shots on this land?

“Let’s say you’ve been guiding down here; if you don’t have a lease, now you can’t hunt on public land, you can’t hunt on the game reserve, you can’t hunt on the national reserve — you’re out of business,” Lambert said. “So if you’re a guide and you don’t have a private lease, you’re done.” per Ryan Lambert... .Hard to feel sorry for a guide making money off public land.....

There has been a huge problem in some of the spots of people "claiming spots" and the boat traffic in a couple of spots is really out of hand...
if you can contact me on back channels I'll send it to you.
parish has no say so on NWR or WMA land.

Going to hurt the local businesses that make money off hunters. And I don't see how this is going to put much money in the parish's coffers. They might get some residents who are willing to pay $50 for a permit to keep hunting conveniently close to home. But I can't see non-residents forking over $250 to hunt land open to the general public. They'll either just go hunt the state/fed land at Pass a Loutre WMA or Delta NWR or just go hunt in another parish all together.

each parish/county can do as they wish with school board property
sell it, lease it, or let it be open to public
i dont really see the issue maybe I'm missing something

Then what's with the guide saying you can't hunt anywhere if they enforce this?

Vermilion Parish leases their acreage out thru what's known as "school board" leases, usually for 5 years, renewable per year. They then lease to highest bidder every 5th year. shite can get ridiculous expensive.

actually I amazed given that parishes history - that these places weren't leased out long long long ago...

For us lazies, where will this money go towards?

Shoulda see the prices from a few years ago on one section. Or maybe you did. Lawd.

The better the "school board" lease, the higher the bids. shite is getting totally outta control, nothing surprises me anymore!

Really I was shocked that there was enough public land left in the parish to charge $50 for a resident and $250 for a non resident to hunt or fish on public land.
I could be wrong on school board land. Usually that land is leased out if I am correct, as the school board operates separately from the Police Jury. Just never factored in school board land falling under that ordinance.

I'm pretty sure it still costs $15 person to hunt WMA's with the WMA permit.
Still not $250.
