What are you going on about?
I feel relatively confident that JJ planned for the trilogy to have roughly the same plot as The Last Airbender. He wrote an episode of the series so it’s not like I’m flinging shite at the wall here. First off I do think he took the characters from the series and planted them into TFA:
Aang/Katara were combined into Rey
Finn is partially derived from Sokka
Kylo Ren is very clearly modeled off of Zuko. Both have major daddy issues, are amateurs at evil, and even have a scar on the left sides of their face.
TFA really follows the first season of Avatar. They both start off with the villain raiding a small village looking the messiah that can defeat the Empire, the heroes escape from the Empire, the protagonist is eventually captured and brought to an ice fortress, manages to escape, defeat the villain and then bring about the Empire’s first major defeat.
He left the rough drafts for Rian Johnson, but save for some set designs (which also have similarities to some sets from Season 2 of Avatar), he threw everything out and fricked the franchise over forever. Now JJ is left with his dick in his hands having no idea what to do.
The good news is with Crazy Rich Asians doing so well that they may gamble on doing live action remake of that abomination theatric adaptation of TLA, but I’d want the trilogy to be shot simultaneously with a great director.

Just watch the new Star Wars Trilogy. Rey is Aang.
A:TLA may not be the greatest animated series of all time, but it's certainly in the conversation. Just really well done all the way through.
