Why would his retirement planning all of a sudden be better if he had no mortgage but 400k less in his retirement savings?

Excluding mortgage, my family of four could live off $2500 a month. We don't, but we could. No debt other than mortgage, budgets in place for dining out, fun money etc . If you "need" $10k a month something is wrong.
