i wonder how many of those in CA criticizing the "crackdown on free speech" support the Chavez and Castro regimes. While maybe not a majority, i would wager its significant

Don't hold me to this, but I believe that quote (or something along those lines) is usually attributed to Mark Twain.
You are correct! Thanks for the tip. My bastardization of the quote is horrible. Here is the original...
“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished by how much he'd learned in seven years.” - Mark Twain

Furthermore, since when is it cool to have foreign troops on our soil policing our citizens?

Yes it is unbelievably outrageous to allow someone responsible for safeguarding an asset to enforce a code of conduct signed and agreed to by taking the flag and saying "sorry you cant do that".
I mean, next thing you know the government will want us to pay our mortgages

I agree with this, except for the part of allowing the Chinese to do the enforcing. frick that.

I need to make sure I understand this... lets say the president is walking around rome and someone around him starts doing something they shouldn't... the secret service would have no right or authority to act? People, WTF... they were invited to this country to safeguard an asset in transportation. There was a specific code of conduct to be followed and they were to enforce. They did so.
Unbelievable
Unbelievable

What's unbelievable is your equation of the Olympic torch to the POTUS. Oh.. and the U.S. to Rome for that matter too.
Anyway, just saying... the runner was an idiot, but I would have rather had U.S. authorities guarding the torch on U.S. soil.

My oversimplified point is thousands of things travel across boundaries and take security with them... whether jewels, artifcacts or people (is the Pope allowed to bring security or are we breaching sovereignty again?)
US authorities were there an obviously did a hell of a job!
Bottom line is she signed a contract and they enforced it in a very quick and gentle way. The fact people are complaining about it are pathetic.

True. I bet if U.S. cops had done it, they would have probably roughed her up much worse.

Why, I thought the analogy was very good.
Security for an international visitor or international event pretty much the same, substitute major work of art for President of the US, Itlay is as sovereign as the US, nothing unbelievable except your outrage by the analysis.

I am not outraged. I think the security guys did the right thing. I just don't equate the "leader of the free world" with the Olympic torch.
I just think that it would be more appropriate to have each nation that the torch runs through, provide security for the torch, in the true spirit of cooperation. Rather than the Chinese following it everywhere, through every nation.

I've never seen an LSU football coach on an opposing field at the end of a game that wasn't flanked by two Louisiana State Troopers.

Again... I guess I have less reverance for the Olympics than most.. but humans != torch?

I was a libertarian and a supporter of the good doctor well before it became 'cool' and I am completely embarassed at how the little ones have hijacked the cause into nothing more then a leftist sit in.
The movement always emphasized freedom, personal responsibility and adherence to the rules in place while we work to fix the broken ones.
Here you have an honor bestowed on someone who takes that opportunity to effectively piss on it. She SIGNS a code of conduct before engaging, purposelly violates, get told by a guard "Sorry I cant let you do that".. and the pinks who have hijacked Ron Pauls name try to cite it as a restriction on her freedom.
I have no problem with the authorities stopping her from what she was doing. Freedom of speech has its consequences.
My problem is with people on this board condemning her for exercising her right to free speech. This “shut up and sit down” mentality is very dangerous to your freedom and liberty.
I also have a problem with foreign troops on our soil, whether it’s New Orleans, San Francisco or Anytown, USA. Especially considering all the talk about New World Order where the U.N. would send troops here for “our protection.”
No thanks!

This argument is the biggest red herring I've ever seen.
It's the Olympics, not a celebration of China. Protests should be tailored in a fashion to voice dissent but preserve the games and not distract from the overall recognition.
In this instance, Carter's participation seems pretty disingenuous and devious in that she occupied a place of honor while plotting to stage her own protest.
frick China, but she went about this the wrong way.

Then what are you bitching about?

They were called paramilitary, because they had the same color jump suits on, Boy Scouts might be paramilitary to that reporter, they are to Rex.
There are also real foreign troops all over the US at any given time going to schools, joint missisons, training, procurement contracts, it is not a yielding of sovereignty.

On the contrary. Her intent was to draw attention to Tibet.
I'd say Mission Accomplished.

Yes, it has made a big difference for Tibet, I heard China is evacuating its troops and paying reparations to Tibet based upon her accomplishments.
