Glorifying prison culture and every single destructive social pathology may have been a bad strategy . Especially when combined with the dumbed down music itself. Losing the song structure in lieu of just a repeated groove, the degradation of the actual musicianship , tossing aside the elegance of 60s and 70s soul, the ridiculous greatness of funk , etc. It sad for the people who consume it and it’s sad that we’ve gone from Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway, EW&F , The Commodores, etc to this crap. It’s grape flavored bubblegum for low IQ dullards.

By that logic, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash should have destroyed rural America, signing about prison and murder.

The music arises from the culture. When certain behaviors PERVADE a culture, they will pervade the music.
