She called AT&T first. She thought she had their ‘inside wire maintenance agreement’ or whatever bullshite name they call it. She doesn’t. $85 to get a tech out here and then, who knows? The customer service rep she spoke with actually suggested trying to change the jack before scheduling a technician visit.

Yes. Green wire was connected to the green terminal and the orange wire was connected to the red terminal. Old jack had four terminals - black red, green, and yellow.

If you don't have a multimeter, go buy a cheap one. Set it for DC volts. Measure across the 2 wires with them disconnected from the jack. You should have around 48v. If you do, the line is good, if not you have a problem with the line.

Thanks, I’ll try your suggestion. This phone line was installed after Katrina. It’s a short run from the box, through the crawl space, to the opposite side of the house. No telling what’s been going on underneath this area of the house. It’s at the extreme end of the house under the breakfast nook. It’s a long crawl to get to this particular area. I hope I don’t have to get under there.
ETA: Connected the green and orange wires to the blue and white terminals ... Nada!
I guess I’m going out to the garage to look for my multimeter. But thanks again, I appreciate the suggestion.

I think I’ve got a meter in one of the tool boxes I have with me. Thanks for your suggestion. I didn’t think of doing a continuity test (or whatever the proper term would be). Obviously, I’m not an electrician.

I’d get her to ditch the landline and do something like this if she has to have a home phone.
